Dry Cleaning

It is generally not recommended to wash items that are labeled as "dry clean only," as this type of cleaning involves the use of solvents that are not present in a home washing machine. Washing these items in a machine can cause shrinkage, fading, and other damage. If an item is particularly soiled, you may be able to spot clean it using a mild detergent and water, but be sure to test a small, inconspicuous area first to make sure the fabric can withstand it. If you do decide to wash a "dry clean only" item, be sure to use the gentlest cycle on your washing machine and use a mild detergent. Avoid using hot water and do not put the item in the dryer. Instead, lay it flat to dry.

How often you should dry clean your clothes depends on a variety of factors such as the type of fabric and garment, how often you wear it, the weather and climate conditions, and any stains or discolorations. Generally speaking, business suits should be taken to the dry cleaners after four to five wears, formal suits should be taken after each wear (or once a season), dress pants and skirts should be taken after four to five wears, formal dresses should be taken after each wear, button-down shirts should be taken after three to four wears (or even each wear if it’s white) and silk blouses should be taken every time they are worn.
